Our Data Centers
RailsPlayground utilizes two primary data centers. Our new shared and VPS our located in our Portland, OR data center, dedicated servers are provisioned in our Dallas, TX data center.
Our VPS and Shared Servers
Our shared servers are quad core Dell PowerEdge servers with RAID 5 15k SAS drives for disk redundancy. We use virtualization technology to segment the server for greater reliability.
Our VPS server run on dual quad core Dell PowerEdge servers with RAID 10 15k SAS drives and are backed up nightly.
Our Dell PowerEdge servers are equipped with redundant hot-swappable power supplies. Switching devices are connected to redundant power distribution units to provide power redundancy for our switching and routing fabric. Each physical 42U cabinet is equipped with 4x30AMP drops, connected to 4x30AMP APC Switched PDUs (AP7902). These four links work in active/active pairs, allowing for power dispersion across separate circuits in the physical building. Protected by a DC power plant, UPS Devices, and a Diesel Generator — our per server power segmentation is a strong
competitive advantage we hold in the industry. We are paying for twice the amount of power we are actually utilizing.
We have also offset our network card redundancy concerns by using link aggregation at our access switch levels (802.3ad) where we have two gigE links working together as a pair.
Our Network at our Portland Data Center
RailsPlayground utilizes connectivity from Time Warner Telecom, Level 3 Communications and Integra Telecom. BGP provides redundancy between the three primary upstream providers, should one fail, trafﬁc and routes will divert to the operational links. Each link is treated with equal priority, allowing for the best path to be chosen. RailsPlayground utilizes segmented access layer environments, each with its own active/active pair of ﬁber uplinks to our distribution network. We pair a set of access switches and distribution uplinks with 2 42U cabinets.
RailsPlayground utilizes a multiple switch approach (Foundry BigIron), and combined with VRRP provides our access layer with active/active uplink connections.
Our Backup Architecture
RailsPlayground’s backup and archiving infrastructure utilize Continuous Data Protection (CDP) software provided by BBS Technologies, Inc. CDP is a server software application that enables disk-based data protection and disaster recovery for servers running a Linux or Windows based operating system. CDP Server protects disk volume data using synchronization over LAN and WAN networks storing point-in-time snapshots in disk-based storage. We backup all of our vps and shared servers nightly and retain 7 days worth of incremental data.
Our Portland Data Center
Our facilities were engineered as a Telco Hotel; the building is structural steel frame with concrete ﬂoors, covered with anti-static tile. 96 Tons of cooling provide adequate cooling resources in our ﬂoor space. We are also in the process of a sustainable approach to cooling our architecture using cool air outside the building, securely ducted into our premises.Redundant FM 200 units are interlocked with HVAC systems on the ﬂoor, and backed by dry pipe pre-action sprinklers (eliminating leak or premature discharge of water)
The exterior of the building is built with a 14’ tall, 2’ thick limestone frieze, preventing unauthorized entry from the exterior of the building.Proximity cards are required for building access, or secured entry through the LightPoint ofﬁces on the 5th ﬂoor during standard business hours. Key Fob activated biometric scanners prevent unauthorized access to the ﬂoor space, and each customer is segmented with ﬂoor to ceiling cage. Remote security cameras record all activity in and outside of the facility, and building security will notify local police at the slightest imperfection of entry.
Our Dallas Data Center
Our Dallas data center is housed in the INFOMART Telecom hotel near downtown Dallas, TX. It features, 6000 amps 480v Input Power, 6 x 750Kva UPS Battery Backup Units, 3 x 2000Kw Diesel Generator with Onsite Fuel Storage, Redundant Liebert 30 Ton HVAC Units, Pre-Action Dry Pipe Fire Suppression, Proximity Security Badge Access, and Digital Security Video Surveillance. This data center is staffed 24/7 with data center engineers capable of solving hardware and network issues.
Our Network at our Dallas Data Center
Our Cisco driven redundant network at our Dallas, TX data center offers carrier grade Internet connectivity to multi-home backbone carriers: Above.net, SAVVIS, Level3, Intermap, Global Crossing and Verio. This network is capable of gigabit speeds from the server to the Internet and includes network IDS, IPS, and DDOS mitigation services. We are connected to this network using 100mbps ports.
All critical services/ports are monitored 24/7 to maintain continuous uptime.
